from Brooklyn's Newest and Coolest Hotel

The latest hotel to rise up in Williamsburg may just be the borough's coolest yet. The eponymous Williamsburg Hotel (rooms from $215) has been talked about for a while now—mostly because there will be not one, but three swanky bars, one of which will be housed in a retrofitted water tower. The hotel recently opened its handsome herringbone doors and the comfortable accommodations offer ample inspiration. Designed by Michaelis Boyd (who is also responsible for the interiors at Soho House Berlin), the handsome rooms are finished with Art Deco-inspired furniture, eclectic pops of color and white-washed timber walls. The industrial bathrooms mix handmade tiles and factory glass with elegant brass fixtures. Herewith, a look inside and some lessons to bring back to your own place.

Invest in a Headboard

You've got a quality mattress for comfort. Make sure you also invest in a headboard to ground the bed and anchor it as your bedroom's focal point. A traditional, upholstered version in leather adds a refined touch of masculine design that will always be in style. You can either go for a fully incorporated headboard and bed frame like this one from West Elm or for a more affordable option, look for just the headboard.

Keep the Bathroom Simple

When you don't have a lot of room to play with in the bathroom, keep things clean, simple and textural. Handmade subway tiles give a fresh, organic feel to a classic look. Keep your vanity clutter-free and only display products that look like they should be there. Finally, add a small plant to bring a bit of the outside into the smallest room in your house. A tiny air plant terrarium will do well in such an environment.

Add the Illusion of Space

This is the biggest takeaway for small apartments. Keep your floor and other surfaces clear to give the illusion of more room. Mount your lighting on your walls or ceiling. This not only provides more light, but also adds an architectural element to the space. Similarly, a wall-mounted ledge gives a simple wall a furnished, bookshelf look.
