In Gramercy, a gut-renovated mystery mansion wants $28.5M

A lot is left up to the imagination when it comes to this townhouse at 65 Irving Place, which just hit the market with a $28.5 million price tag. When it last sold in 2014, the two-bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home fetched a mere $11 million, but according to the brokerbabble, the circa-1846 townhouse was recently “fully reimagined”—hence, the nearly $18 million price jump.

Back in 2015, the New York Daily News speculated that former Yves Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane was the mystery buyer of the 7,535-square-foot building. And indeed, there are some indicators that this may have been the case: as the Daily News noted, Slimane is linked to the LLC that bought the place, and one of his frequent collaborators is listed on DOB filings for the place.

So that’s all speculation, but in the meantime, some details on the house itself can be gleaned from the listing. The renovation of the unassuming building was led by “an owner who is well-known for flawless taste and extensive expertise with restoration and authenticity.” (Slimane, perhaps?)

There are no interior photos—those, apparently, will be shown “by appointment only”—but what we can see is plenty chic. The revamp introduced materials imported from Europe along with custom floor-to-ceiling windows with French Modernist glass, and steel casement doors, and a “uniquely finished basement.” There are three fireplaces, two bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and one half-bathroom across five floors.

And the sixth floor, there’s an access point to the 2,000-square-foot outdoor space, which covers three tiers and comes with views of the Manhattan skyline.
