It was already a big day at Runner’s World: Global Running Day. It got even bigger with the announcement that Betty Wong Ortiz will be RW’s new editor in chief—the first woman to hold the title at the 51-year-old magazine. The news comes as 57 percent of road race finishers last year were women.

“I’m so excited and honored to lead such an iconic media brand as Runner’s World, a resource that has for years guided me through my personal running adventures, which include five marathons and nearly 20 half marathons,” Wong Ortiz said.

Wong Ortiz will provide direction for all RW editorial platforms, including print, web, and social channels. The announcement was made by Bill Strickland, editorial director for Rodale, which owns RW.

Wong Ortiz currently is the director of editorial strategy and operations at Condé Nast’s Bon Appétit. She previously spent six years as the editor in chief of Fitness, where she developed a passion for and expertise in running, health, and nutrition.

“The camaraderie and inclusivity that running brings to millions is worth celebrating, and I consider Runner’s World the home for that community,” Wong Ortiz said.

In addition to its print and online channels, RW hosts events such as the Runner’s World Half & Festival and the Runner’s World VIP program.

She succeeds David Willey, who served as editor in chief for 14 years. Willey announced in April that he was stepping aside.

Wong Ortiz starts at RW later this month.
