It is a meta-idea in that it covers every possibly conceivable technology that will allow objects to talk to each other - some of this is referred to as M2M (machine to machine) but most of it is much less complicated than it sounds.

The first obstacle that needs to be overcome is the communication mechanism. Right now it seems wifi is in the lead. But what about NFC (near field communication), bluetooth, sonar or even LiFi? What about that communication mechanism that gets invented in 2017 that nobody has even though about yet?

Once we figure out the connection mechanism the next step is to get a standard for sensors. The Spanish company Libelium has some good ones. And of course there are Raspberry PI and Arduino. But nobody has a grip on the market yet - because the market is still being created as we speak.

Im excited about IoT - not because it will connect the whole world in some karma like experience, but more for its ability to make objects interactive. I love the idea that an object has properties, features that are not observable to the human eye. Kind of like humans themselves. OMG - the internet of humans!!!
