With the onset of technology, few people still send handwritten notes. Handwritten notes can make a positive impact on the recipient and contribute to strengthening relationships.
Here are three reasons why savvy leaders make the extra effort to write and send notes.
1. You make a difference in someone's life by letting them know that they matter. Years ago, I received a handwritten note for an achievement from someone I really admire. It was an unexpected surprise that made a significant positive impression on me. I kept this note and still refer to it when I need a boost. You can send a note for a thank you, recent accomplishment, condolences or other special situation when you sincerely want to acknowledge someone. Handwritten notes give the impression of being more genuine and heartfelt than an email, text or other technology.
2. Studies show that your life's happiness and satisfaction goes up when you make someone else feel special. It's like the principle of giver's gain, when you plant happiness, you get happiness. Think of a time when you took the extra effort to recognize a direct report, colleague or client with a handwritten note. What impact did this have on you? Philosopher Jim Rohn states: "Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have."
3. Handwritten notes stand out. Because handwritten notes are rare these days, people will notice that you are differentiating yourself. There are few actions that are more notable than sending a handwritten note to a business associate or someone you recently met. By taking time and committing to the small details of sending notes, you set yourself apart for the right reasons. Successful people look for ways to build better relationships. Get into habit of sending handwritten notes and make a difference in someone's life as well as your own.
