Cowboys Sign Free Agent Offensive Lineman Byron Bell

The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly signed another free agent - offensive lineman Byron Bell.

Bell’s signing seems to be in response to the expected retirement of right tackle Doug Free, and the uncertainty about the health of Chaz Green going forward. Bell originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He went on to start 56 games over the next four years for them. After signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2015, he started all 16 games for them. He missed the entire 2016 season after an injury in the offseason. He has played both tackle and guard in his career, giving him the position flexibility that the Cowboys like.

Signing with Dallas is a homecoming for Bell, who grew up and played high school football in nearby Greenville. He adds depth at a spot the Cowboys need to fill, and at 28 is still reasonably young for the position and he comes with a ton of experience.

The Cowboys like to fill holes in free agency to free themselves up when it comes time for the draft. This is a perfect example of acquiring pieces that allow for flexibility in their strategy moving forward.
