8 Apple iPhone 8 Design Ideas That Never Made It Out Of The Lab

Can you feel that tingle in the air? That isn't the chilling reminder that climate change is real or that school is back in session. No, that frosty breeze of excitement skimming your pinched perineum is the icy freshness of a new Apple iPhone. September 12th is nearly upon us and that means Tim Cook will stand up on stage and announce three new iPhones. The Apple iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus and of course, the crowning jewel of a decade of the iPhone — the iPhone 8.

So what is the new Apple iPhone 8 going to look like? Leaks and rumors, to this point, suggest it's going to look like a phone. Yet, there may have been a point early in the design process in which Apple was willing to at least brainstorm some truly innovate and game changing ideas.

You know my friend Terry who sells electronics out of the back of his van in the Dollar Tree parking lot right? Well, his cousin Donny shares a San Francisco loft with six other people and one of those people is Vihaan. Vihaan works at a start-up for an app that uses facial mapping artificial intelligence to recommend the best shaving cream. He co-founded the startup with Dmitri. Dmitri used to work on the maintenance staff at the super secret Apple product design lab and in the trash, one night, found this:

I notated each sketch on the scan. Could "Jon" stand for Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive? Possibly. I mean, every great idea is sprouted from at least eight terrible ones. Though whomever drew this left out the i[Thing] notations, so who really knows?

  • 1. A round iPhone (the iDisc). It's possible that a future iteration could be a disc phone. Ultimate Frisbee players are stoked.
  • 2. A hand phone (the iHand). Did you ever see the Total Recall remake? Like that. But not terrible.
  • 3. A payphone? Nope.
  • 4. An eye phone iPhone (the EYEiPhone). Get it?
  • 5. An avocado phone (the iCado). Millennials don't need homes anyway.
  • 6. Homepod phone (the iHome). Seems like a good cross marketing opportunity to integrate the iPhone with the Homepod, if you never leave the house.
  • 7. Drone phone (the iDrone). Because who doesn't want their phone hovering two feet above their head?
  • 8. Dog phone (the iDoggo). A very good dog would also be able to manage iTunes for you.

Obviously, all of these ideas were ultimately rejected or didn't exist at all. The Apple iPhone has always been something that the world of technology product design can look upon with proud satisfactory glee. We know the Apple iPhone 8 is going to be both more of the same and something new. It'll be an iPhone, but it'll look like a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and not a circle or avocado.

The Apple iPhone 8, based on a constant slew of leaks as to the screen design, will be no exception to Apple's continued focus on revolutionizing mobile computing and communication. Regardless of Tim Cook carrying around a graphing calculator in his pocket for math reasons, you know the man is about to put on a show with an iPhone 8 in hand. Are you ready for another revolutionary rectangle? You know I'm always down for geometry with which I can order both soup and a car.
